The tide went out at four and took the evidence with it. By the time Ines Roarke reached the shingle there was nothing left of the night before but a line of wet stones and a shoe that did not belong to anyone in Harborline.
She had not been back in eleven years. Nothing about the walk down from the station had changed, which she took, correctly, as a warning.
